Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in Doha to offer condolences in person following the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar's Father Amir, who died Sunday at the age of 74. President al-Sharaa was received by Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, at Lusail Palace, where Sheikh Tamim has been welcoming a steady stream of regional and international dignitaries throughout the country's official mourning period.

A Written Message Followed by an In-Person Visit

Al-Sharaa's visit followed a written statement of condolence he issued on Sunday, shortly after Qatar's Amiri Diwan announced Sheikh Hamad's death. "I extend my deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to my brother, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and to the government and people of the sisterly State of Qatar, on the death of the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," al-Sharaa said in the statement, carried by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), adding that he stood in support of the Qatari people during the mourning period.

Part of a Large Wave of Regional Leaders

Al-Sharaa's visit forms part of an extensive procession of foreign leaders traveling to Doha this week. Among those received by Sheikh Tamim at Lusail Palace were Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The Maldivian President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and the Prime Minister of Libya's Government of National Unity also arrived in Doha to pay their respects, with condolence receptions expected to continue over the coming days as more foreign leaders and royal representatives from across the Gulf, the wider Arab world, and beyond travel to Qatar.

A Reign That Reshaped the Region

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until his voluntary abdication in 2013, when he handed power to Sheikh Tamim in one of the rare peaceful transitions among hereditary Gulf rulers. He is widely credited with transforming Qatar from a modest emirate into a major diplomatic and economic power, driven by the expansion of the country's liquefied natural gas industry, the 1996 launch of Al Jazeera, and Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Sheikh Hamad's funeral was held in Doha on Sunday following the late afternoon prayer, with burial at Lusail Cemetery.

Qatar's Amiri Diwan has declared four days of national mourning, suspending government work and lowering flags to half-mast nationwide until civil servants resume duties on July 19.
